3 Days in Westport, WA with Kids — A Cozy Fall Getaway

Fall is such a magical time to explore Washington’s coast. The crowds are gone, the beaches are wide open, and the sunsets are pure drama. This October, we packed our warm layers, grabbed some s’mores fixings, and headed to Westport, WA for a cozy 3-day family adventure. Whether you’re traveling with little ones or older kids, this coastal town has the perfect mix of nature, wildlife, and laid-back charm. Here’s our full itinerary 👇

🍁 Day 1 — Beach Walks & Bonfire Vibes

We arrived in Westport in the afternoon, grabbed warm drinks at The Sands Café, and stretched our legs on the Westport Light Trail — a paved path along the dunes with ocean views the whole way.

Just before sunset, we wandered down to the beach near the lighthouse. October is one of the quietest times to visit, and we practically had the sand to ourselves. The kids chased the waves while we watched the sky light up in gold and pink.

Dinner was at Merino’s, a local favorite for fresh seafood, followed by a cozy bonfire back at the house. Pro tip: bring extra blankets and your s’mores kit — fall nights are crisp and perfect for firelight.

🦭 Day 2 — Marina, Sea Lions & Crabbing Fun

The next morning, we biked from the lighthouse down to the marina. The trail is flat and kid-friendly, and the reward at the end? A front-row view of barking sea lions lounging on the docks.

We climbed the Westport Viewing Tower to watch boats come in and spotted seals and pelicans from above. Then it was on to the Westport Aquarium, a small but super kid-friendly stop with touch tanks and local marine life.

After lunch at Blackbeard Brewing (great fries for the kids, a beer for the grown-ups), we tried crabbing off the dock. Even if you don’t catch much, it’s a blast for kids to pull up the traps and see what’s inside.

We wrapped up the day with a simple dinner at the house, hot cocoa, and board games — exactly the kind of cozy fall night we love.

🌲 Day 3 — Twin Harbors & Tokeland Adventure

Our last day started at Twin Harbors State Park, just a few minutes south. This beach is wide, quiet, and covered in big driftwood logs — the perfect playground for kids to climb, explore, and collect shells.

From there, we drove 20 minutes to Tokeland Hotel for lunch at Wandering Goose — a charming, rustic spot with farm-to-table comfort food. On the way back, we stopped at Westport Winery Garden Resort, where the kids explored the sculpture garden while we sampled a few local wines.

We ended the trip with one final walk at sunset — a perfect closing to a cozy coastal weekend.

🐋 What You Can See in October

One of the best parts about visiting Westport in the fall is the wildlife. This week, we spotted:

  • 🦭 Sea lions at the marina

  • 🐦 Migrating birds along the dunes

  • 🦀 Crabs and tidepool critters at low tide

  • 🦌 A couple of deer in the dunes at sunrise

And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a gray whale offshore 🐋

🧺 Packing Tips for Fall in Westport
